Sex education in schools

ree

Sex education in schools has long been a highly debated topic. In India, the aftermath of many rapes and sexual assault has been synonymous with a call for universal sex education. But, sex education is much more than just a tool to prevent rising cases of sexual violence. Sex education has long been a taboo, because of the wrong held belief that it corrupts children. Adolescents tend to be unaware of the changes this period brings in their life, thus necessiting sex education. However, some people think such delicate issues should be left the parents. But, parents feel embarrassed to talk openly with the children in this regard. They believe imparting sex education can breakdown the prenesting notions of modesty and tear the moral fabrics of the Indian society. In India curiosity of adolescents around such issue is either stamped out of their mind, or are fitted by wrong sources or worse uninformed sources, like their friends. In a period when children start understanding the world in a mature way, proper sex education can help remove social evils of toxic masculinity etc. In schools, especially co-ed schools, providing sex education can empower mutual understanding. It helps people who are genderfluid accept themselves as they are instead of being stigmatized. However implicating this can save consequences, as educated, poor rural households may drop out of schools as it is a taboo to them. However, they must be made to understand its benefits to help them come back. It's high time that sex education be brought into the mainstream of the education policy. Seeing it's "many" benefits, the people as well as the government must strive to provide "universal sex education".
